Speaking Spanish or any other language for that matter isn't hard, it's just something that a person isn't use to. However, if you wish to advance to the next level, you must avoid these two common mistakes in conversing in Spanish. |

Ignoring Proper Pronunciation and Accents
In most modern-day languages, the correct pronunciation, and accent on the words being spoken matter as much, if not more, as the words themselves. As they say, it is not so much the words but how the words are spoken that speak of an individual's true intentions for another.
This is very true with it comes to speaking Spanish. Keep in mind that Spanish is not a hard foreign language to learn per se if and when you remember the following rules on the pronunciation of some letters:
- The Spanish letter "h" is always a silent letter, hence,hamburguesa should sound like "am-burr-guess-ah"
- The Spanish letter "j" is pronounced like the English letter "h"
- Always make the letters "b" and "v" sound alike in Spanish
- The letter "r" should always be trilled
- Depending on which Spanish-speaking region you visit, the Spanish "double -l" may sound like "j" in "just" or "y" in "yes" or "ly" in "sillier" but it will never sound like "l" in "lake"
- Every Spanish vowel is short.
As to accents, keep in mind that when speaking Spanish, your one little slip in this regard can completely change the meaning of the word and, consequently, the entire sentence. One classic example are the words esta ("EH-stah" first syllable stress) meaning "this" and está ("eh-STAH" second syllable stress) meaning "is".
As much as possible, always strive to speak like the native Spaniards do by listening to Spanish audio tapes, television shows and radio broadcasts. This is not being snotty, just respectful of a powerful language, which you might also demand of others when they speak English.
Following English Language Structure
Before speaking Spanish, you must think in Spanish. This is especially true when you are translating English sentences into Spanish statements. Keep in mind that the English sentence structure is adjective-noun while its Spanish counterpart is noun-adjective.
Just like paying attention to pronunciation and accent, your failure to follow the correct Spanish sentence structure can lead to misunderstandings due to the subtle changes in meaning. If you get a few laughs over your language gaffe, then good for you but you really must avoid this common mistake. After all, you may not be so lucky next time.
For example, brown dog in Spanish will be perro (dog) marrón (brown). Or cold water is aqua (water) fria (cold) in Spanish. There are many more mistakes to be avoided when speaking Spanish - interchangeably using señora and señorita as well as confusing the verbs "ser and "estar", to name a few more - but the abovementioned two mistakes are the most grievous of them all.
So, take the time to unlearn them from your system and you should be fine anywhere you are in a Spanish-speaking community.
